Members of the ScenaRio 2012 team took part in the Fifth Asia-Pacific Urban Forum organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and its partners (local authorities, international institutions and development banks, representative of the civil society and of the private sector, etc.) on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of June in Bangkok. The First Forum already took place in Bangkok in 1993.
More than 900 participants gathered to debate on the challenges linked to sustainable urbanization in the Asia-Pacific region and to share innovative solutions and best practices concerning an unifying topic: « Cities of Opportunity: partnerships for an inclusive and sustainable future ».This Forum had three primary objectives:
- Debating on contemporary challenges regarding urban development and their concrete repercussions on the different actors and stakeholders;
- Promoting the sharing of experiences and best practices in order to approach the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015;
- Exploring opportunities of cooperation and of bonding between the different actors and processes concerned in order to pool the resources needed and accelerate the change.
The increasing urbanization of this region is one of the major stakes that will be treated at the Earth Summit. This is why the members of the ScenaRio 2012 team insisted on meeting and presenting the project to the main actors and key personalities of this dynamic, in particular Noeleen Heyzer, ninth UNESCAP Executive Secretary appointed in August 2007 by the United Nations Secretary-General.
